You are never actually looking into someone’s eyes on a screen; you are looking into a camera lens positioned 2 to 6 inches above where their digital face appears. When you introduce notes into the equation, where you place that text determines whether you look engaged or distracted.
The Geometry of Sightlines: Angular Offset
Humans detect gaze shifts greater than 5 degrees off-axis. At an average viewing distance of 24 inches (60 cm) from your monitor:
- 1 to 2 inches (2.5–5 cm) below camera: Represents less than 4 degrees of angular offset. Attendees perceive you as looking directly at them.
- 4 to 8 inches (10–20 cm) below camera: Around 10 to 18 degrees of offset. You clearly appear to be looking down at your keyboard or desk.
- Secondary Side Monitor (15+ inches away): Over 30 degrees of lateral offset. Your head turns completely away, breaking rapport.

Three Common Setups & How to Optimize Them
1. Single Laptop Screen
When using a built-in laptop camera, screen real estate is limited (typically 13–16 inches). The best strategy is to dock your teleprompter or notes app directly at the top center of the screen, immediately underneath the webcam notch. Reduce the prompter window width to 350px so you never scan left-to-right.
2. Large External Monitor (27" to 32")
On large monitors, the bottom third of the screen is an eye-contact dead zone. Never leave meeting notes at the bottom of the screen. Instead, float a transparent overlay like Glance centered along the top bezel directly beneath your mounted external webcam.
3. Dual Monitors
